Must-see sites
Les Aiguilles de Port Coton: The fame of this spot is not only due to the paintings done by Monet, who fell in love with the place. They owe their name to the fact that when the wind gusts, the foam flies into the air like frothy flakes resembling cotton. The Aiguilles regularly offer magnificent sunsets in warm colours, enhancing the end of the day.
The Grand Phare de Goulphar: the most imposing of the island’s three lighthouses is located at Kervilahouen on the south-west coast.92 metres high, this granite tower was built between 1826 and 1835, and its optical range of 50 km is one of the longest in Europe. The view from the top is breathtaking.
A permanent exhibition presents the different aspects of the lighthouse keeper’s job.
La Pointe des Poulains: located at the north-western tip of the island, this is an emblematic site on Belle-île.
The tour begins with a visit to the property belonging to the tragic actress Sarah Bernhardt, comprising 2 villas and a fort that will take visitors back to the atmosphere of the time.
As you continue along the coast, you’ll come across the Poulains lighthouse, which stands on an islet accessible at low tide. Inside, an exhibition showcases the natural riches of the headland.
The Vauban Citadel: Overlooking the port of Le Palais, it has been a listed historic monument since 2006 and its museum is open all year round (except January).
The entrance ticket also entitles you to visit the Belle-Île Museum of Art and History, the Navy Hall and the Citadel’s corps de place.
